These devices are usually mechanical or electric in nature, and their role is to act as squirrel obstacles in order to cut off squirrels path to feeders seed tank.
Squirrel barriers and protectors are necessary and effective piece of squirrel proof bird feeding equipment no matter if your bird feeder is squirrel proof by default or not.

Before we go into details about the types of these devices, there's one more thing I'd like to point out: choosing right barriers and protectors for your feeder is really no brainer and here you'll find easy advice on how to do it.
Also, remember that the most of the barrier and protector devices are equally effective if commercially made and available for purchase online, or homemade using your own DIY skills.
Mechanical squirrel barriers for bird feeder protection

The most common anti-squirrel devices in this category are:

Squirrel baffles for bird feeder poles

Squirrel baffles for hanging feeders, also known as squirrel domes

Anti-squirrel slinky on bird feeder poles

Cages for bird feeders

Squirrel baffles for bird feeder poles

A baffle for bird feeder pole is a must have piece of anti-squirrel accessory in case your bird feeder is pole mounted or hanging on a pole. It prevents the squirrels from reaching your bird feeder by climbing up the pole. Depending on the shape, the pole baffles can be cone shaped or cylindrical, and depending on the size, the baffles may be squirrels proof only or both squirrels and racoon proof.

Cone and cylindrical shape of bird feeder pole baffles

While cone shaped baffles are simple static barriers and usually firmly fixed to a pole, the cylindrical baffles are not. They are loaded with spring mechanism and will start to move up and down the pole under the squirrels weight once the squirrel tries to step on it. Of course, the squirrels will get confused by this game changer and will quickly go back from the uncertainty to the safe ground. Here's a video to show you how cylindrical baffle barrier works:

If you are not sure which specific baffle barrier brand to choose for your feeder pole, please check my recommended squirrel baffles article with the best baffles you can find online.

Also, here are some basic tips for pole baffles:

Cone shaped and cylindrical barriers are equally effective against squirrels

If you go for cone shaped baffle, make sure it's 18 inches in diameter. The bigger, the better.

Cylindrical baffles are good enough against the squirrels if one foot in height. But they are pretty much useless against racoons if not 2 feet in height!

If you are thinking about DIY cone baffle, don't make it too large in diameter if there are strong winds in your area. The winds may uproot your feeder pole out of the ground that way. Remember the umbrellas in the wind.

Avoid using any materials other than metal for your DIY cone baffles. The squirrels are revengeful and persistent animals and will bite the way through any obstacle they can to reach the food.

The positioning of baffle barrier on the pole is extremely important! The best position of cone barriers is at the level of your shoulders. Also, the upper side of cylindrical baffle should be at the level of your shoulders.

Squirrel baffles for hanging feeders a.k.a. squirrel domes

It's easy to guess by name: squirrel domes are type of squirrel barriers very similar to pole baffles, but the domes are always placed on the top side of bird feeders.

Domes are always placed from the above the feeders

The domes are used for hanging bird feeders exclusively. Their primary role is to protect bird feeders from the squirrels coming from direction where the feeders are hanging from. Due to dish-like semi spheroid shape, choice of materials used for construction and narrow fulcrum point, squirrel domes act like bumpy and slippery surfaces that bevel under the squirrel weight throwing the squirrels off.

The secondary role of the domes is to protect bird seed from heavy rains and snow.

Squirrel domes are proper anti-squirrel solution in various situations, no matter your feeder is hanging from: tree branch, porch beam or as squirrel baffle for shepherd's hook.
When choosing the right size of the dome, please remember that the best size is 18" in diameter or more. Proposed size is simply the matter of real life experience.

Check this video to see the squirrels fail when trying to outsmart some backyard domes:

Squirrel domes are not much of a challenge for homemade production. For example, you can use an old plastic bowl from your kitchen for the dome. But if you are not DIY kind of person and don't care to spend couple of bucks, check this recommended squirrel dome article.
No matter how funny or unreal it may sound, slinky toy is another mechanical barrier to protect your bird feeder from the squirrels trying to climb up your feeder pole. This method is becoming more and more popular in the States. It all started with the newspaper article about certain grandma from Kentucky who came across the idea to put a slinky toy on bird feeder pole.
The press article went viral and many birders tried this solution with certain success.
If you'd like to give it a try, check my slinky on bird feeder article I've written previously.

Cage barriers for bird feeders

Placing bird feeders inside steel cages is absolutely fantastic idea for keeping squirrels off from bird food. The whole idea is around the fact that the birds are much smaller than the squirrels, meaning that the birds can get past the cage bars and access the feeder inside, while the squirrels can't.

Unfortunately, the cages of this type are not made separately from feeders, so you will need to construct your own DIY cage for the feeder you already have. But if you are interested in complete solution (cage with feeder inside) you can check the most reliable models of caged bird feeders available for purchase online.

Electric squirrel barriers: Squirrel shocking barriers

Electric squirrel barriers are the most advanced and possibly the most successful way to stop the squirrels stealing bird food. There are two reasons why electric barriers are so effective and popular: the first is the squirrels don't get hurt when receiving small, rather unpleasant electric shock. And the other is long-term oriented: after a couple of small electric shocks, the squirrels actually get trained not visit bird feeder any more. Otherwise, squirrels are extremely persistent creatures and will always get back attempting to outsmart your mechanical barriers while scarring off your birds. Bat that is not the case with electric barriers. They will not get back once they leave and that's how you'll lose your enemies one by one.

Squirrel barriers that don't work for bird feeders

Please note that only the best squirrel barriers have been presented in this article. In the above text I did not mention some frequently discussed squirrel barriers for following downsides:

I do not advise using anti-squirrel spikes for bird feeders as credible mechanical barrier because they are not effective on bird feeders. Spikes may be effective on fences, but please note that some of the spikes may seriously hurt both birds and squirrels. The other day I have seen dead pigeon hanging from the spikes in the neighborhood and that is no way to go for me.

I do not recommend using chemical barriers or ultrasonic barriers for your bird feeder for the reasons I have explained in squirrel repellents article. They are effective against the squirrels, but will hurt your cat or dog as well.

And in the end, I have one more suggestion.

Chipmunks are potentially more dangerous than the squirrels

That's the thesis I'll try to justify here.
But first I want to address the questions from many bird lovers asking for the same advice:

Is there any difference between chipmunk proof and squirrel proof bird feeders?
Or:
Is anti-squirrel bird feeder effective against chipmunks too?

I think the above questions deserve the answers having in mind that most of the reviewers like myself often totally forget about the chipmunks and place an accent on squirrels exclusively when writing about pest-free bird feeding.
That's why the anti-chipmunk properties of some of the best bird feeders money can buy are rarely mentioned and that's unfortunately the rule of the thumb.

Still, the thieving potential of the chipmunks is not a subject to underestimate especially having in mind their cheek pouches are able to stash great loads of loot, even up to three times the volume of their head!
As you have probably noticed, the motto of this pest-free bird feeding website is "...because Chip & Dale suck". Please note that Chip and Dale are chipmunks, not the squirrels. And there is good reason for that.

Now seriously, before I answer the above questions, let's get to know the advantages of our enemy first: the chipmunks.
Sun Tzu said it very important when preparing for war. :)

Chipmunks vs. Squirrels - the differences in bird feeder proofing

Squirrels are bigger and heavier than chipmunks...

Don't worry - this is not going to turn into biology class. The idea is: if the chipmunks and the squirrels are relatives and pretty similar kinds of animals, than bird feeder proofing strategy should work for both, right?

Theoretically speaking - yes.

Squirrel proof bird feeders should also act as chipmunk proof bird feeders.

But there's more to it. Please read on...

No matter how similar the chipmunks and the squirrels are, it's the differences between them that are of key importance for chipmunk bird feeder proofing.

Except for the approximate visual impression, the chipmunks and the squirrels are very different animals in terms of life cycle, habitats, mating and production of offspring, etc. For example, chipmunks are predominantly underground creatures, spending over 15 hours per day in burrows, while most of the squirrels prefer trees or ground dwellings. Chipmunks are hibernating throughout the winter time, while squirrels don't. Someone said that the squirrels compared to chipmunks are the same as the rats compared to the mice.

Now please pay attention because here's the difference of the utmost importance for safe bird feeding: the chipmunks are generally smaller in size than the squirrels and less in weight than the squirrels!
Believe it or not, these are the two most important advantages the chipmunks will use to outsmart your bird feeder that otherwise works just fine against the squirrels.
That's why I think the chipmunks are even more dangerous than the squirrels in terms of pest-free bird feeding.

Let's address both of these advantages and make the strategy how to beat them both.

Weight advantage of chipmunks over your feeder

The vast majority of commercially made squirrel proof bird feeders work under the same rule: squirrels are heavier than the birds. Once a squirrel steps on feeder's active surface (usually the perch) with its full weight, squirrel proofing mechanism will activate in order to prevent the squirrel reach the bird seed. This type of bird feeders is known by the name weight activated squirrel proof bird feeders. They are all pretty reliable in terms of squirrel proofness because they have been adjusted to trigger squirrel proof mechanism at the point of the weight of the average squirrel. But what happens when a chipmunk that is twice or three times less in weight steps on it? Probably nothing.

But there is solution to it!

Some of those feeders threshold are adjusted with factory defaults and there's nothing you can do about it. Those feeders are certainly NOT of your interest if you want to get rid of the chipmunks.

Luckily, some other feeders are fully customizable by simple setting procedure to whatever threshold you desire, even the threshold for chipmunks or bigger birds if you will.
Typical representative of custom weight adjustable feeders is famous Brome Squirrel Buster Plus.

Body size advantage of chipmunks over your feeder

Small body size of chipmunks compared to the average squirrel body size may also present serious issue in your feeder's anti-pest defense because the chipmunks can go where the squirrels can't.
This can be the problem if your feeder features some kind of mechanical barrier to stop the squirrels entering your seed tray.

Examples:
In case you are about to construct your own feeder like this homemade squirrel proof bird feeder, or intend to chipmunk proof your existing bird feeder in the vein of commercially made caged bird feeders, take good care that the bars are tight enough for the chipmunks, but loose enough for the birds to pass through.

Other means of chipmunk proof bird feeding

Here are some additional ideas on how to improve your anti-chipmunk strategy:

1. Just like the squirrels, chipmunks are mammals too and therefore able to feel small electric shocks. Squirrel shocking bird feeders are another great way to deter chipmunks from your garden and never to come back again.
2. Chipmunks have the same kind of mouth taste receptors like the squirrels do. They both just can't stand the taste of seeds mixed with spicy hot pepper, while the birds don't care at all. So, it's always good idea to fill the feeder with bird food squirrels hate, sit back and watch what happens next :)
3. Always remember to protect your feeder and your feeder pole with anti-squirrel baffles. Baffles are equally effective against both the chipmunks and the squirrels. "No pasaran"!

Non-typical advice to you all

Never feel sorry for leaving chipmunks without food. Yes I know they are terribly cute or at least tend to be, but if you ever start to feel compassion towards them, always remember the chipmunks are omnivores that will eat anything on their way from any kind of seed and insect, all the way to the frogs! Yes, the frogs!
And do remember that chipmunks are preppers. The amount of food they collect over the summer is for sure bigger than the doomsday supplies in my cellar.

Conclusion

It's time to conclude: not every squirrel proof bird feeder is chipmunk proof bird feeder, while every chipmunk proof bird feeder is squirrel proof at the same time.
Use the above advice to let the chipmunks know they are not invited for the dinner today!

Enjoy.
Free standing or standalone squirrel proof bird feeders are one stop solution for squirrel-free bird feeding.
This means they come as complete, all in one pack solution so you don't have to go through tons of reviews about the various types of squirrel-proof feeders, poles, baffles, squirrel deterrents, feeder hanging, different anti-squirrel tactics, etc.
Unfortunately, these "set and forget" anti-squirrel feeders are not so easy to find. In spite of the great reviews from previous customers, some of the most renowned brands are discontinued now without any reasonable explanation from manufacturers.
Though it is possible to assemble great free standing squirrel proof bird feeder compiled from top quality feeder itself along with the appropriate pole, baffle and dome, I thought it would be nice to point out great quality features presented in Brome Complete Buster Plus, possibly "the last of the Mohicans" from Free standing squirrel proof bird feeder group.

As shown in the image above, Brome Complete Buster Plus comes along with Accessory Kit and here's what you get in the package:

- Brome Squirrel Buster Feeder. This feeder is the best rated weight activated squirrel proof bird feeders in the market.
- 1 1/4 inch Universal Pole Kit to place your feeder on it
- Pole adaptor so you can connect the feeder to the pole

Weight activated squirrel proof bird feeders (a.k.a. weight sensitive squirrel proof bird feeders) are without any doubt the largest group of anti-squirrel bird feeders. Literally, all of the feeders in this group use simple fact of gravity: the squirrels are much heavier than the birds and that's a fact of key importance for triggering feeders squirrel proof defense.
The very nature of feeder activation is either electric or mechanic and that's what makes crucial difference between weight activated feeders. By the rule, all of these feeders are equipped with some kind of a string that reacts to squirrels weight, and that's why they are also called "spring loaded squirrel proof bird feeders".
The number of all representatives from this group is huge and if you'll agree I will present only the ones with the best reviews from previous customers here.

Droll Yankees Flipper

This type of bird feeders features battery operated electric motor inside. Feeders in this group come equipped with either rechargeable or replaceable electric batteries and electric circuit. Once a squirrel steps on the feeder's perch, the electric circuit gets closed under the squirrel's weight and the perch starts spinning in order to spin the squirrel off from the feeder.

The most popular and the best reviewed feeder in this group is certainly Droll Yankees Flipper.
The Flipper is known for many great features such as truly amazing anti-squirrel effectiveness, lifetime warranty, spare parts availability, bird seed antimicrobial protection and much more.

Mechanical weight activated squirrel proof bird feeders

There are two ways how mechanical feeders prevent the squirrels from reaching bird seed:

1. Seed port closes under squirrel's weight

These are the feeders with inbuilt mechanical spring. The spring is attached to feeder's perch and is strong enough not to stretch under the weight of single or several birds.
But when a squirrel steps on the perch, the spring will stretch under the weight and the seed ports will close preventing the squirrel from reaching the seed (as shown in the image).

The best reviewed feeders in this category come from the same manufacturer: it's well established Brome company with models like Squirrel Buster Plus, Legacy, Standard, etc.
Some of Brome feeders are factory trimmed, while the others offer adjustable springs so that you can decide how big (or better say how heavy) are the birds that can access bird seed from your feeder.

For more details please check Brome page at Amazon.com.

2. Perches bevel under the weight

Yankees Dipper:
The squirrel is too heavy for the roost and the birds are not

This is truly unique way the feeder reacts when overloaded by squirrels weight. Before the squirrel even gets what's going on, it will find herself falling to the ground because the roost will bevel and collapse under the weight of the squirrel.

The only representative with this feature is Droll Yankees Dipper.
With four feeding ports, great choice of construction materials for outdoor conditions and 5 lbs. seed capacity, Dipper is best selling bird feeder from Yankees family of products.

The Dipper has great reviews from previous customers and if you'd like to check it please visit this Amazon.com link.
After sharing video tutorial on how to construct DIY squirrel shocking bird feeder (which by the way received great feedback from the audience), it occured to me I should share some other DIY ideas that require even less investment of your money, your time and your DIY skills.
So, I've stumbled upon this wonderful and simple invention presented in video tutorial created by Chris Notap. Chris is "all around" DIY guy and his YouTube channel is all about tips and tricks: mouse traps, some cooking recipes, eggs peeling tricks, fixing home appliances and stuff... but I liked this tutorial very much and I think his homemade bird feeder is really squirrel proof eligible.

Chris did it using only:

- plate glass
- all purpose silicone
- a piece of old seat belt fiber
- 1.5" copper pipe, but I think brass or even hard plastic pipe could do the trick

Here's how he did it:

Of course, Chris is well aware that small birds can make 1 1/2" pipes, while the squirrels can't. It's the same tactics used by commercially made caged squirrel proof bird feeders.

If you liked this tutorial and intend to construct this birdfeeder according to Chris's blueprint, please note that squirrel proofing is not done after the feeder is finished. Right placement of bird feeder is crucial so please read my squirrel proof bird feeding tips before you decide where to place bird feeder pole in your backyard.
If you've already seen my squirrel proof bird feeding tips before finding this article, you have probably noticed that I've paid a great deal of attention to the issue of bird feeders placement there.
People usually go wrong hoping to find the best squirrel proof bird feeder as one stop solution that will get them rid of the squirrels. But in fact, the feeder itself works with full anti-squirrel potential only if hanged correctly. Therefore, proper bird feeder placement is the cornerstone of your squirrel proof strategy.
Please remember that the anti-squirrel bird feeders should be regarded as the last line of defense against the squirrels and you should do everything possible to make it hard for the squirrels to come close to your feeder.
Otherwise, even the best squirrel proof feeders tend to become more or less vulnerable to the squirrels if placed incorrectly.

So what is the purpose of the anti-squirrel feeder? And what is the importance of hanging feeder the right way?
Let's put it as simple as possible:

The role of squirrel proof bird feeder is to prevent the squirrels from stealing bird food

The importance of good feeder placement is to prevent squirrels from scaring off your feeder visiting birds ad to minimize chances the squirrels attack or damage your bird feeder.

This is truly important to understand and I'll be more than happy if you take this to your knowledge.
And you'll be happy too! 😊

Tips for hanging bird feeders to keep the squirrels away

Here I'll share some practical advice focused on where and how to to hang your bird feeder to prevent the squirrels from reaching it.
Please take care to take each tip into serious consideration or otherwise the results may be below expectations.

1. Never hang your feeder to the tree unless you from Australia

Don't make it easy for the squirrels

Did you know the squirrels don't live in Australia?
Good for Aussies...
But if you came here from any other part of the world make sure to remember that hanging bird feeder to the tree is the worst possible choice you can make.
Trees are natural habitat for the squirrels. It's their home. How hard can it be then for the squirrel to reach the feeder hanging from a branch? Next to nothing. Trees are place for squirrel feeders, and not for bird feeders.
No matter how aesthetically pleasing your feeder may look somewhere a the tree crown, hanging bird feeder to a tree is the same as feeding the squirrels, not he birds.
Knowing that even the best and the most expensive squirrel proof feeders in the world could not cope with this situation with great success, it's time to give up this non-idea.

2. Avoid hanging bird feeder near any possible jump-from objects

Hanging your bird feeder near backyard fences, parked cars, trees, roofs or any other object from where the squirrels can (and will) jump from is also big no-no! It is important to find "clean" spot in your backyard so that the squirrels could not reach it by jumping all the way to it.
But how near is "near"?
I'd give it 15 feet in radius, at least. Here's why:

The longer the distance, the better. It is really important to discourage the squirrels from taking this kind of long distance jumps because of the risk of damaging your feeder by falling it on the ground.

But what if your backyard does not offer enough space?

Then you should get the sturdiest bird feeder that shock the squirrels. Its metal construction is resistant to squirrel jump ons, while the electric shock is repellent-like feature that will make the squirrel leave in no time so that the birds can get back to the feeder shortly.

3. Don't use ropes for feeder hanging

Use chains instead. There are at least two good reasons for this:

Chains are weather resistant and do not tend to thin out like ropes do , so you don't risk your feeder to fall down from hanging hook. You can either use stainless steel chains or powder coated steel bird feeder chains that resemble wrought iron. Both are rust free.

Chains are resistant to squirrels teeth and you can never tell what the squirrels are up to.

4. Use squirrel proof bird feeder poles for bird feeder hanging

Kettle Moraine 8' pole
with anti-squirrel baffle

Bird feeder poles with anti-squirrel baffles are absolutely necessary for proper bird feeder hanging.
Still, there's a single trick to it. You can't use just any pole height. The rule of the thumb is that 8 foot bird feeder pole is the optimal in height because the squirrels can not reach it by jumping from the ground. Anything less than that may be the subject of ruthless squirrel invasion.

Another important thing aside from height is that the pole must be equipped with anti-squirrel baffle.
This is why I chose Kettle Moraine 8 foot pole to be presented here because it's the only pole in the market that meets all required demands.

For more details about Kettle Moraine bird feeder pole please check my article about 8 foot bird feeder poles.

5. Get big bird feeder dome

Aspect's 18" anti-squirrel dome

Feeder domes are pretty much like anti-squirrel baffles. But unlike the baffles, the domes protect the feeders from the squirrels coming from the above the feeder. Domes feature slippery surface to make it hard for squirrels to sneak over it, and more importantly - the domes are designed to lose horizontal position when under the squirrel's weight, so that the squirrels fall to the ground easily over slippery surface.
But that is not the only function of the domes.
Domes are pretty much the best way to hang the feeder to a pole and are compatible with the most of the hanging feeders.
Another great thing about having the dome is that it also acts as a weather guard for both the birds on the perch and for the feeder's seed ports.
When it comes to the feeder domes the general rule is that the ones with bigger diameter are more effective, That's why I chose Aspect's 18" anti-squirrel dome to be presented here.
OK, let's run through the checklist:

We've bought brand new, top notch squirrel proof bird feeder with all the bells and whistles

We 've filled it with 100% natural squirrel proof bird food the squirrels are absolutely disgusted with

We have purchased four arm, 8 foot bird feeder pole and hanged the feeder right in its place

We've secured feeder pole with the best rated squirrel baffle and dome

We have invested 300 bucks to get rid of the squirrels.
But it didn't go well.
Because we've forgot the most important thing.

Please watch this short video:

You can spend hundreds of dollars on anti-squirrel devices, but if you forget how far the squirrels can jump it's all in vain.
The right placement of bird feeder is the most important squirrel proof tactic and the whole system of your anti-squirrel defence depends on it. As a matter of fact, 90% of squirrel protection is about feeder placement.
How high feeder pole should be?

The height of bird feeder pole is truly important thing to take into consideration for your anti-squirrel strategy. The point is simple: the squirrels should not be able to reach the feeder by jumping straight up from the ground. But the question is how high can a squirrel jump?
By summing up the experiences from numbers of bird feeders owners, I have found out that the most gifted squirrels can jump up to 4.5 feet vertically, meaning that the bottom of your bird feeder should be somewhat above that level.
Taking into account that the bird feeders do not usually exceed two feet in height, the conclusion is that 8 foot bird feeder pole should be perfect in size, while 10 foot bird feeder sounds like overkill unless your feeder is under giraffe attack ☺
Just kidding... 10 foot bird feeder poles are actually deer proof solution.

"Kettle Moraine four arm bird feeder pole" looks pretty much like coat hanger in Victorian style.
But in fact, it is highly decorative heavy duty bird feeder pole made of steel. The surface of the pole is protected by black powder coating in order to withstand harsh weather conditions.

The pole is 8 foot high, while the pole diameter is 1 inch and that's what makes Kettle Moraine compatible with the most of the anti-squirrel baffles in the market.

Kettle Moraine is in the group of the tallest bird feeder poles in the market, but it is not the tallest. If you are after even taller pole for some reason, please check 10 foot bird feeder pole further bellow in this article.

Aside from stylish looks and durability, this feeder pole features another great things: it can accommodate up to four bird feeders with total of 30 pounds of bird seed.
The feeder is also easy to install due to twister ground socket that drives the pole 20 inces into the ground.
And in the end, the most important thing: this pole comes with the anti-squirrel baffle and the overall opinion from previous customers is that the pole is squirrel proof indeed.

10 foot bird feeder pole example

10 foot bird feeder poles are not exclusively anti-squirrel devices because their primary focus is to keep your feeder out of the reach of the deers. However, there are some great examples of 10 foot deer proof bird feeder poles equipped with anti-squirrel and anti-raccoon baffle, so if your bird feeder gets visited by the intruders bigger than the squirrels, I suggest you should visit the link and read the reviews there.

Squirrel on barbed wire

Recently, while reading numerous reviews of various anti-squirrel devices for bird feeders, I came across dozens of comments from readers asking the authors questions like:
"What are the best anti-squirrel spikes?"
Or:
"Where do I put the anti-squirrel spikes? "

I've been thinking to myself: how come I've never seen a single review of squirrel deterrent spikes itself?
So, I've started looking around for any kind of other people's experience with spiky squirrel protection and finally now I can give you shortest possible advice on that matter: "It does not work!".
Here's why.

Do anti-squirrel spikes exist at all?

I took the time and did thorough research on the Internet and I really could not find any kind of solid proof that barbed wires or spikes of any kind are actually effective in stopping the squirrels from looting bird feeders.
On the contrary, the squirrels don't seem to care much about the spikes!

Just check the comments from the all the folks who tried and failed with so called anti squirrel spikes at this Amazon link and you'll see what I mean.

The worst thing of all is that the squirrels can even use your spike protection as a ladder to climb up your fence and reach your bird feeder.

Here's the real life example:

No matter how fragile they may seem, the squirrels actually have pretty flexible bodies, tough fur, tough skin and paws due to their way of life. Persistent scratching against rough tree bark and scrub-like vegetation made the squirrels practically immune to spike protection.
Therefore, the analogy of protection from squirrels and protection from the other animals can not be made, or at least not in this case. It's obvious.

So, the anti-squirrel spikes don't work. What works for bird feeder, then?

Squirrel proof bird feeding is not so simple no matter how it may seem. It's rather complex skill with very wide base of knowledge you should adopt first, often even before you get your own bird feeder.
But if you are really into it, you'll may want to spend some time learning the best squirrel proof tactics.
I hope my article about squirrel proof bird feeding tips is a good way to start and I hope you'll find it useful.
After reviewing over a hundred squirrel proof bird feeders and hand-picking only the best ones to be presented on this website, I am truly surprised and honestly touched by the noble cause behind Squirrel-X bird feeder sales policy.
This is the statement from the Squirrel-X manufacturers that moved me:

"A portion of every purchase is donated to a bird habitat and conservation"

Honestly, I can't remember I've heard anything that comes even close to this. That's why I think Squirrel-X is the noblest squirrel proof suet feeder available for online purchase. By buying this fider people are helping wild bird feeding nationwide.
It's no wonder so many people are engaging philanthropy. Besides, it's both affordable and pretty solid in terms of squirrel resistance and weather durability as stated by well over 600 previous customers.

Advantages of squirrel proof suet feeders for birds

Double suet portion - Squirrel-X suet feeder

Squirrel proof suet feeders are caged bird feeders that use cage as a physical barrier to prevent squirrels and big birds like blackbirds from stealing small birds food. The logic is simple: only the small birds can get past the cage bars and reach the food (as shown in the photo above), while the squirrels can't.
Possibly the biggest advantage of suet feeders is compact suet texture that's less likely to spill around the feeder than a bird seed food. This way the squirrels and the other uninvited animals will not get accustomed to camp underneath your bird feeder waiting for the crumbs to fall to the ground.
But just in case they get attracted to the feeder, you can chase them away in no time using squirrel proof suet food and that's the bird food squirrels hate.
Suet feeders may have up to four suet slots. For example, Squirrel-X has two suet cakes capacity.
Another great advantage of suet feeders is sturdy construction. Steel construction with no plastic parts is completely safe against squirrels teeth.
Also, the weather durability of these feeders is really awesome as the cage bars are coated with rust resistant colors.
And in the end, each and every caged suet feeder is real workhorse and requires no special maintenance except for the cleaning.

How and where to hang squirrel proof suet feeder?

Proper hanging of suet bird feeder contributes to its squirrel proofness in a huge way and it's truly important to understand that not just sued feeders but all of the anti-squirrel bird feeders depend upon the right choice of placement.
Good practices of hanging suet feeders are no different from hanging any other squirrel proof bird feeders.
But, going into depth here is way beyond the scope of this post, so I strongly recommend you should read my squirrel proof bird feeder tips. You'll find plenty of useful tips for placing bird feeders there.

Where to buy suet cakes?

In case you are not sure how to make suet cakes on your own, you can always rely on Amazon suet cakes offer. There's plenty of blends there you can choose from, indeed.

Amazon's Choice: Blazing hot bird seeds the squirrels will hate

Squirrel repellent food is absolutely way to go approach to squirrel proofing your bird feeder and it's definitely worth of your attention if you want to divert squirrels from stealing bird food.

Let me tell you some science behind it.

The very concept is based on a fact that the birds are able to eat extremely spicy, hot pepper blended food without noticing any difference comparing to regular bird seed (or any need to dial firefighters after the lunch).
On the other side, the squirrels will hate hot food because they just can't stand the taste of it.
This is because the birds don't have hot food receptors in their mouth, while the squirrels do.
So, when a squirrel tastes even a smallest bit of this kind of food it will start acting like most of the people would do: it will start running around in circles feeling the heat rush to the ears and it will finally run away looking for the way to put out the fire... and never to come back.

Oh yes, this works for Mexican squirrels as well :)

Of course, the squirrels don't get hurt permanently. They just learn they are not invited to the feast.

What should one expect from squirrel proof bird food?

Nowadays, the bird food production is highly competitive branch. Having in mind all the advanced methods and expertise used in the bird food production, I suggest we should not go for the second best when choosing top quality squirrel proof bird food with squirrel repellent properties.

What we need is one stop solution for following requirements:

Birds must love the food. The food must attract various kind of birds over and over again meaning that all the nutritional needs of the birds must be satisfied using right choice of food ingredients.

Squirrels must hate the food: the amount of repellent ingredient within the food must be carefully balanced to deter the squirrels but not to hurt them.

All the food ingredients must be 100% natural. The repellent component must be 100% natural as well because the birds ingest it together with the food.

The shape of the squirrel proof bird food must suit your feeder requirements: the food should be available either as squirrel proof bird seed for classic bird feeders, or in the form of squirrel proof suet in case you have suet bird feeder.

Great reviews are more than welcome: if the positive feedback from previous customers is there to support the claim that this squirrel proofing method actually works, then it's definitely good anti-squirrel solution.

Cole's Flaming Seed Sauce

If you are into preparing bird seed mixture according to your own recipe, you could try and add some cayenne pepper powder to it. It should work against the squirrels. Have fun with, do a couple of experiments and try to determine the right proportion of the pepper powder in the seeds.
Still, most of the people people find using Cole's Flaming Seed Sauce more efficient than cayenne powder because the sauce is liquid and stays on the seeds as it dries out.
Surprisingly enough, the sauce does not spoil the seeds and the seeds does not rot under the influence of the liquid from the sauce.
A bottle of 16 oz of Cole's Flaming Seed Sauce is enough for about 40 pounds of the bird seed (3 tablespoons per 5 pounds of the seed) and it seems like real good bargain to me.

About battery operated squirrel proof bird feeders

In spite of the fact that battery operated squirrel proof bird feeders represent the youngest generation of bird feeders in the market, they have already been established at the very top of the best selling anti-squirrel bird feeders today.
It is needles to point out how popular and efficient they are; the numbers of excellent reviews from previous customers speak for themselves.
All the feeders in this group have one thing in common: they use electric current from batteries to keep squirrels away from bird seed. That's why they are also known as the electric anti-squirrel bird feeders.
However, this group is not uniform as there are some crucial differences between specific models of feeders inside of this group.

Differences between battery operated squirrel proof bird feeder models

The first difference is about the way the feeders work. There are two equally effective but essentially very different concepts of feeder functioning you can choose from:

Spinning feeders: these feeders use electric battery power to spin the perch once the squirrel steps on it and the squirrel finally gets spinned off from the feeder

Squirrel shocking feeders: electric battery power is used to hit the squirrels with tiny electric shock so that the squirrels become conditioned not to hang around bird feeders of this kind

The second difference is based on the type of the battery. Thus, there are feeders with:

Rechargeable battery: the battery is integrated as a part of the feeder and the feeder usually comes with charger with or without additional cost for the charger.

Replaceable battery: feeders with replaceable batteries use commercially made batteries, usually 9V type

According to reviews of previous customers, the vast majority sent really positive feedback on two two feeders of this type:
After several hundreds of reviews and the rating 4.5 out of 5, Yankee Flipper is by far the best spinning anti-squirrel feeder in the market.
You can read all the reviews at this Amazon link.

Flipper has rechargeable type of the battery. The battery is integrated within feeder structure and the good thing about the battery is you can replace it with new one once it loses charging power.
Yankee Flipper's manufacturers offer limited lifetime warranty on the feeder, while the warranty on electric parts of the feeder is limited to one year.

This feeder is tagged as "Amazon's Choice" product and that's certainly great recommendation for quality, nice price and great reviews from verified customers.

Wild Bill is truly great squirrel proof bird feeder with electric shock surprise for the squirrels!
This feeder is rated with 4.0 out of 5 after well over hundred of reviews and you can read the reviews on this page.

Unlike previous feeder with integrated battery, Wild Bill's feeder does not need recharging. It works on replaceable standard 9V battery with enough power to give the squirrel tiny and harmless electric shock and keep it away from the feeder and the bird seed.
Don't worry - this feeder is constructed in the way the birds don't get shock at all.

Wild Bill is also "Amazon's Choice" product, meaning it is the top of the class of battery operated bird feeders.

Pros and cons of battery operated bird feeders

There's so much good about these feeders:

Both spinning and shocking feeders are really efficient against the squirrels because the squirrels will finally give up trying to outsmart the feeders

They are fun to watch and that's why kids love them! Squirrels are so sweet after getting dizzy from spinner ride or acting clueless after getting a little electric shock. All in all, they get instantly confused by electric feeder experience that's nothing like they are able to meet in the nature

Great customer support, fair warranty terms and spare parts you can count on

But there's one downside I can think of: you should never leave the battery without power.
Regular recharging or battery replacement is mandatory procedure.

Actual granny's bird feeder with slinky hanging
down from feeder pole

It has been almost two years now since I've heard the news about how Kentucky grandmother got rid of the squirrels by attaching slinky to bird feeder pole. In her own words, she has been testing different squirrel proofing tactics for some time and finally concluded that slinky on bird feeder gives the best homemade squirrel proofing results by far.
Being honest (as grannies usually are), she also added that slinky is not exactly 100% effective against the squirrels.
But guess what? I did my own research and I've found out where she went wrong and I am going to share that with you.

Helping slinky vs. squirrels

What you see to the left is the actual photo of granny's bird feeder with the squirrel trying to climb the pole up and against the slinky that's pushing the squirrel down. At the first look, everything seems to be in place here. But something is in very wrong, indeed. Can you guess what?
It's the feeder itself.
Did you notice how close the feeder is to the tree? And here's what granny says:

"The squirrels tried to climb the pole for two days. After they fell off many times, they gave up. A few are now trying to jump from the tree to the top of the bird feeder. If they land it, I let them stay on the feeder for a snack."

Verdict:
You can't blame slinky for defeat because it protects bird feeder from below!
Also, please note that some gifted squirrels may jump 5 to 6 feet to the side and placing feeder next to the trees is big "no no" practice. Even the best and the most expensive anti-squirrel bird feeders lose great deal of their squirrel proof capacity if placed near squirrels launch pad!
If you'd like to know more tips like this, please read my anti-squirrel bird feeding strategy. Please make sure you grab a big cup of coffee first because it's a long read... but it will pay out if you are fed up with squirrels and you don't want to make the same mistakes as granny did.
After a lot of reading about other people experiences on this subject and taking it all to account, I've decided to put together this small tutorial about making homemade squirrel shocker. The tutorial is aimed to get you acquainted with all the practical advice I've found out there, along with possible dos and don'ts during the construction.
Following lines should help you avoid making common mistakes and help you avoid the dangers along the way.
Yes, the dangers...
But more about that later on.

Of course, I'm not here to talk you in or out from making your own electric anti squirrel bird feeder. I'm here only to point out some important things you should take into consideration before you decide whether to go for homemade squirrel shocker or not.

How easy or how hard it is to build homemade squirrel shocker?

Homemade squirrel shocker: the squirrel just before being shocked

That's tough question for me to answer, because the answer is truly on your side.
Squirrel shocker construction is really no brainer for those that are good with hands and already have some basic knowledge of the electric current.
But for the folks that are less skilful it will require some more effort and possibly more time. If you feel you're in this group, I still encourage you to read this tutorial to the end. Who knows, maybe you are just being harsh on yourself?
Certainly, the power is in the knowledge. So just to be sure you are familiar with the way squirrel shockers work, I strongly recommend reading my article about squirrel shockers basics first.
There you will find plenty of theoretical knowledge that is necessary for your personal squirrel shocker project.

Why should you go for DIY squirrel shocker instead of buying one?

Let's try and see what are the advantages and disadvantages of DIY shockers when compared to commercially made branded shockers you can buy online:

Homemade squirrel shockers are both fun and challenging (in a good way) to build. Buying branded squirrel shocker is not even closely adventurous in that way.

You can use your imagination to customize your DIY shocker any way you want in terms of dimensions, looks, wooden materials you'll use, seed capacity, etc. Commercial shockers are "as is" and that's it.

Commercial and properly constructed DIY shockers are equally effective against the squirrels

Improper placement, wiring or wrong choice of electric supply for DIY squirrel shocker may result in hurting both squirrels and the birds. That is the danger I've mentioned in the introduction. BTW, with commercial shockers you don't risk hurting the animals.

The key component in the electric circuit of DIY shocker is proper electric power energizer. If you don't already own the right type of energizer, you'll need to buy one. It means that homemade squirrel shockers (if made from scratch) are not much cheaper than commercially made shockers as one would expect.

As you can see, DIY squirrel shocker construction is more like subject to fun, creativity and learning process than a chance to save some bucks.
In fact, at the end of the day, a really good homemade shocker may cost you as much as the best squirrel shocking bird feeder you can buy.

Starting DIY squirrel shocker construction

There are two obvious choices you can make at the start:

1. Electrifying existing bird feeder or bird feeder pole, or
2. Starting from scratch by constructing bird feeder first and then electrifying it

If you are not much into carpentry, the first option may be the easier way. But why carpentry?

Hand wired homemade squirrel shocker: the frame,
the threshold and the roof (click to enlarge)

Because all three components: bird feeder, the threshold and the frame should be made of wood. Metal, glass or plastic materials are difficult for wiring because you can't fasten the wire to it by hammering. I addition, metal alone may come pretty messy in terms of conducting electric current because metals are conductors while wood is not.
In case you don't already own wooden bird feeder house and you can't construct it yourself, try your local shop or pick one at the Amazon.com.
When choosing/constructing wooden bird feeder, please pay attention to the following:

The feeder must be suitable for outdoor conditions (wind, snow, rain, frost...)

The construction must be robust so it can stand hammering nails to it when fastening the wires. Just look how thick and sturdy the wood is on the above image.

Try to pick the feeder with dimensions that suit desired capacity of the bird seed

Try and find feeder with threshold. If you take a good look at the image above, you'll notice wooden threshold around the bird house is wired. Threshold is mandatory for wiring and if your feeder does not have it, na old wooden serving tray or something similar should do the trick. It is also good protection from spilling the seeds from the feeder.

Aside from the bird feeder with threshold, you'll need the frame (check the photo). It's outer wooden structure around the feeder that looks like clothes drying rack. The frame is also wired with parallel grid of wires. For the purpose of the frame you can use some old picture frame. The larger - the better.

Electrifying bird feeder

OK, now we are getting to the most important part so please pay close attention.
The electric system we'll use to electrify the feeder is made of two components:

1. Electric energizer - this is your electric power source. It is usually used for electric fences to keep away domestic and garden animals away from passing the fence line. Energizers of this kind feature pulsating electric current - a single, short electric impulse at the time. Thus, shocked animal has enough time to recover and instinctively move away from the power source.
Energizers are plugged in 110V wall outlets and when connected to the fence (in this case: the feeder wire circuit) they send electric energy impulses to the circuit.
Since the squirrels are small animals and we do not want to harm them, I strongly recommend energizers with small energy outputs of 0.1 to 0.2 Joules (J).
For the squirrel shockers the most used energizers with very positive reviews are Patriot PE2 for smaller shocks and Dare DE 80 for slightly stronger shocks.
Energizers come with detailed manual instructions that will give you plenty information on how to wire them and much more details for broader picture of usage and maintenance.

2. The second component is your electric grid. It is made of two separate circuits: power circuit and ground circuit.
On the image above you'll notice two clamps: red and green. Power circuit starts from red clamp, while the ground circuit starts from green clamp and ends in the ground with ground rod. Once again, these two circuits are separate and the electric current does not run until the squirrel touches both circuit wires at the same time. So, when it happens, the electricity starts running through squirrel's body and the squirrel will experience the electric shock.

Wiring the feeder components

Imagine black is ground and the red is power

The logic behind the wiring is simple: you need to place power and ground wires next to each other in parallel grid using the rule: power, ground, power, ground, always shifting alternately... and never like power, power, ground, ground.
Different circuits must be neighboring ones. For example: if the roof is power, the threshold must be the ground and then the first neighboring frame wire must be power, the next to it is ground... and so on.
I hope you understand that the squirrel must touch both ground and power wire at the same time. If it touches only one wire, nothing will happen.

Another important thing is the distance between neighboring wires. Neighboring wires should be close enough so that the squirrels can touch them synchronously, yet far enough so that the birds can't. Of course, that depends on the size of the birds you are feeding.

As the wires are concerned - it's best to use galvanized aluminium wires of small gauge (up to 12) because of low impedance and durability.

Once finished, your homemade squirrel shocker should work like this:

Electrifying bird feeder pole

Electrification of feeder poles utilizes the same principles as feeder electrification explained in previous part of this tutorial: energizer with power and ground circuit wires shifting alternately and spirally from the bottom to the top of exclusively wooden pole. Pole squirrel shocker is great solution in instances oh high positioned bird feeder where the squirrels can not reach the feeder any other way except for by climbing the pole. Here's great example of homemade squirrel shocker pole using Speedrite 2000 energizer which is overkill in my opinion:

I really hope you'll find this tutorial useful :)
Best of luck with the squirrels...
Having in mind terrific reviews and great acceptance the most of the shockers of this type have, one can conclude that electric anti-squirrel feeders share the hall of glory side by side with spinning bird feeders.

What exactly are squirrel shockers?

Squirrel shockers are electrified bird feeders charged with electric batteries able to produce low electric current, usually under 50 mA (milliamperes). Thus, the electric current is not capable of killing the animals. It gives the animals small electric shock instead, without even fainting them. Think: cows behind electrified fence. It is pretty much the same concept.

How come squirrel shockers work so well?

It's because their efficiency is based upon basic biological mechanism for all animal species: the learning.
We all know how persistent the squirrels are, but in spite of that and after like 20 electric shocks in a row, every single squirrel will give up trying. The learning principle of trial and error is the very point in this case and after unpleasant shocking experience the squirrels will finally get trained not to come close to the bird feeder.
Also, it has been scientifically proven that the squirrels do communicate among themselves using means of body language, scent caused by fear and vocalisation, so there's a dubious but reasonable chance that the shocked squirrel will not take its friends to the feast anywhere near electrified bird feeder.

But what about the birds?
Do the birds get electric shock too?

Are squirrel shockers safe for birds?

Straight answer is: yes! Squirrels do get shocked while the birds don't.
Here's a little science behind this:
Bird's body parts such as beaks, feathers and feet are very poor electrical conductors with much higher impedance than squirrel's body parts. That's why electric current of weak value refuses to run through bird's body. Commercially made squirrel shockers feature well tempered low electric amperage and that's the reason the squirrels get electric shock and the birds are safe from it.

Types of electric squirrel shockers

While the working principle of all squirrel shockers is pretty much the same, there's still a difference about the way they get charged with electric power. According to the way the battery is recharged, squirrel shockers are divided into two groups:

1. Self charging shockers

Shockers in this group are capable of autonomous recharging without interference or help from your side because they have solar cell integrated in their housing.
This type of shocker is convenient for placement on sunny locations without nearby electric power source.
The best example of solar powered shocker is "Squirrel-Off" bird feeder.
Note: this feeder is currently sold out. Please check the availability at this link.

2. Manually charging shockers

Shockers in this group are suitable for placement in your backyard or any other location with electric power source needed for recharging.

Good thing about them is they are independent of sunlight intensity and work without problems in days obscured by overcast or during short winter days.
The best reviewed representative of this group is certainly Wild Bill's Squirrel Shocker.

Squirrel shocker placement - best practices

I can not stress enough how important it is to place your bird feeder properly.
So please, always remember this advice: even the world's best anti-squirrel feeder becomes vulnerable if deployed in wrong or careless manner!
What does it mean?
It means that if you really want to get rid of the squirrels, you must know some additional tactics like:

How to choose proper pole for your squirrel shocker?

Where to place the pole: do's and don'ts

Does it really matter what kind of anti-squirrel baffle will you use?

If you really wish to get the maximum benefit from squirrel shocker I strongly recommend reading anti-squirrel feeder placement tips from this website.

In hope this will be helpful,
Enjoy!
It's been almost two years now since I've wrote last squirrel proof bird feeder review here and it's because no new feeders showed up in the meantime.
Well, at least not the ones worth of your attention. Really, "there is nothing new under the sun".
This means that even after these two years Droll Yankee is still world's best spinning anti-squirrel bird feeder, while Wild Bill is still the best electric squirrel shocker of all times. Unfortunately, the people are still too busy to read long articles like how to choose best squirrel proof feeder before actually buying one. That's how shopping mistakes are usually inevitable.
Of course, Chip and Dale love that!

Now, let's get serious because I will not finish this post before I share one short, but very important tip with you:

Beware and be aware of cheep feeder copies!

Feeder got eaten by squirrels.

This is what's left from this very unfortunate "squirrel proof" bird feeder after becoming squirrel food.
No, am not going to tell you the name of the feeder because it is against the rules of this website, but I will tell you it is cheapo copy of otherwise real good veteran feeder Brome Squirrel Buster Plus.
This feeder is on the market till recent and sadly enough, it is soaring with sales.
So maybe it is time to start reading long articles, right?

Internet Vampirehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11080910405203656612noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1761134175765692160.post-471159398607980772016-05-04T21:44:00.000+02:002018-04-28T11:32:09.858+02:00What exactly do you mean by "squirrel spinner"?Now honestly... I have read literally hundreds of squirrel spinner reviews all over the Internet while running this website for the past 3 years. All kinds of reviews, both positive and negative of course. And what I have learned from negative reviews is that people have no clue how to choose the spinner with the effect they expect to achieve.
This short advice here on this page is to help you avoid waste of money, improve shopping experience and prevent disappointment from possible wrong spinner choice.

So what do you expect from "squirrel spinner"?

This is the single most important question you should ask yourself before buying squirrel spinner. Because look where the problem starts:
The problem is that the term "squirrel spinner" is broad in meaning and often used to describe at least two types of squirrel spinners that are of completely opposite purposes. One is to feed the squirrels, the other one is to chase them away! I suppose you are already getting picture where people usually go wrong when making spinner choice.
Here's the photo to make it more clear. Please read the photo description:

Squirrel spinner to the left is anti-squirrel BIRD feeder
Squirrel spinner to the right is spinning SQUIRREL feeder
Both are squirrel spinners but with very different purpose

Now it's clear - there are two types of squirrel spinners depending on what you want your spinner to do:

Spinner to the left on the photo aims to spin-off squirrel from bird feeder and prevent squirrels from eating bird food. If that is what you expect, please check the best spinning anti squirrel bird feeder there is!

In case you want to forget about the birds and have fun watching squirrels spinning on squirrel feeder, please check best reviewed spinning squirrel feeders. The collection is small, but it's hand picked.

It's easy... You either want a spinner for squirrels or against the squirrels :)

Looking for cheap squirrel proof bird feeder, finding a gold mine?

I remember that day... I got really nervous after wasting an hour or so trying to find and review just any of those "cheap squirrel proof bird feeders" people generously promote on their websites...
And guess what?
The fact is most of those bird feeders are either NOT CHEAP or NOT SQUIRREL PROOF. Or none of it!
But that's not the real reason I went bananas... It did not drive me crazy itself as much as a thought I'll be trashing my time at every occasion I look for decent discount on just everything I buy online!
Frustrating, right?
But then I have discovered secret door with best possible cheap prices online. And not only for real-deal squirrel proof bird feeders, but for just anything I can imagine...

A secret door to huge discounts and how to use it

I'll try to make this straight forward: though there are several types of squirrel repellents in the market today and with different approach in anti-squirrel tactics, it seems no single repellent product is powerful enough to keep the squirrels off from bird food all by itself. Therefore, squirrel repellents can not represent stand alone squirrel proof solution, but they can for sure help as an additional protection to your bird feeder.
This conclusion is backed up by hundreds and thousands of customers who reviewed numerous squirrel repellent products available online.
Let's see first how squirrel repellents work.

Repellent types:

1.Ultrasonic repellents - these are small AC or DC powered electronic devices that broadcast sounds inaudible to human ears, but squirrels just can't stand it and run away. Of course, this theory sounds too simple and too good to be true, so here is the catch: most of the ultrasonic repellents are not squirrel selective and would probably scare the hell of the birds as well! And what's even worse - your cat and dog too! Bad news is also that most of those devices are not "exactly inaudible" to humans and that's what you'll notice in the quiet of the night. So, the general conclusion is that ultrasonic repellents are not only squirrel repellents, but more like animal repellents in general. Therefore, I do not recommend this kind of anti-squirrel defense.

2. Chemical repellents - usually based on coyote urine odor, mothball smell, or some modern synthetic chemical compounds, the very idea of chemical repellents is to chase away the squirrels from your backyard using squirrel hypersensitive sense of smell. But just like ultrasonic repellents, this type is not squirrel selective and it is very dubious how would certain bird species and your pets react in particular. So, would not dare to recommend this type of repellent either.

3. Food repellents - the point is in adding hot tasting additives to birds food and believe it or not - that might be the best squirrel repellent there is! It's because it is proven to be safe for the birds and the squirrels hate it. Here's how it works: bird's organism is set to be completely immune to hot spicy food while the squirrels just hate Mexican food! So unlike the squirrels, the birds don't feel hotness and do not suffer intestinal consequences from ingestion of the repellent. Secondary benefit of using this kind of repellent is that rats, groundhogs, rabbits and similar rodents also hate hot food.
Also, good news is that you can buy either feeder ready food with repellent already added, or repellent only so you can add to the bird food of your choice.

So, I definitely want to recommend following squirrel repellents:
Ultimate tips inside.

The truth is I have already tried to compile Internet's most comprehensive collection of squirrel proof bird feeder tips and it seems people find it very helpful. Yes, I think did a good job... but somehow, I have an impression that so far I've failed to stress enough just how important is to avoid mistakes when choosing feeder pole!
I failed probably because one can't stress that enough... Now, as a mean of redemption, I will try to put together some advice on how to choose proper pole for squirrel proof bird feeders.

But first and foremost try to remember these ultimate tips (watch out, this is of great importance folks):
1. Bad feeder pole can ruin the reputation of the best squirrel proof bird feeder money can buy
2. Great feeder pole will contribute to squirrel proof properties of just ANY bird feeder no matter if the feeder is the top anti-squirrel quality right out of the box or DIY bird feeder improvised from beans can.
If you are not quite sure what I'm ranting about here, please just remember that feeder pole is either squirrel proof friendly or squirrel friendly!

Pole with baffle.
That's what I'm talking about!

OK, now that we know that feeder pole is feeder's biggest aide, let's pick the best pole to keep those squirrels out from bird food.
1. The height of the pole is crucial. Never choose short poles because some "talented" squirrels out there are able to jump almost 5 feet straight up. Always go for poles from 8 feet and up - that should do the trick. Please check my 8 foot bird feeder pole article on this matter.
2. Never underestimate the power of squirrel baffle. Squirrels can and eventually will find the way to climb any pole and reach the food, while baffle makes it almost impossible. So in case your feeder pole is not already equipped, go and get the baffle and do not give it a second thought.
3. Danger from squirrel attacks also comes from above, position your pole properly. Move it away from any tall objects, backyard inventory, trees, walls, log piles, roofs, etc. Put it somewhere with plenty of clean space around. That way the squirrels won't have a chance of side jump on feeder.

Ground anchor pole

4. Avoid mounting and maintenance hustle. Feeder poles are required to ease your love for birds and not to complicate it. So, try and find the feeder pole that's easy to mount to the ground and easy to relocate in no time. I personally like poles with ground anchor screws. It feels much better than digging around in backyard every time the pole needs to be moved for any reason. Also, try to pick good quality pole at the very start. I know quality comes with price, but you don't want to to be sanding and repainting those poles twice per year, right? Durable powder coated steel poles are usually good choice.

Isn't it lovely :)

5. The last, but not the least - pole should be nice looking and I really dig those stylish "coat hanger stand" poles like the one I have been showcasing here (pic to the left). If you like it as well, you may want to check if it is available for sale at this Amazon.com link. I strongly recommend checking all of its features. In fact, it's awesome bird feeder pole.

Unfortunately, at the end I must conclude that from all available feeder poles in the market, just a few actually qualify for "squirrel proof" title. It's probably because of the pole producers who do not pay much attention to that feature thinking it is all up to feeder. But it is not.
Please check below the poles and baffles I recommend.
Why people make wrong choices when shopping for squirrel-proof bird feeders?

We all make wrong shopping choices here and there and there is nothing new about it. But if it's to judge by literally hundreds and thousands of negative online reviews written by disappointed shoppers, shopping mistakes seem to be very frequent with squirrel-proof bird feeders in particular. The reasons for that are many and I will try to identify the most certain pitfalls that await you down the road. So here is big no-no list or if you prefer - a collection of major things to avoid when shopping for anti-squirrel bird feeder.

Getting lost in plenty

Due to a overwhelming number of different anti-squirrel bird feeder products in the market today it is really easy to get lost in plenty. Vast number of manufacturers of squirrel-proof feeders and literately the swarm of their online affiliates are creating even more confusion over peoples final decision on which bird feeder to buy. Here's how to prevent confusion: in this tutorial you will learn just what type of squirrel-proof bird feeder is the most convenient for your own needs. Concentrated on a single type of feeders only, your search is narrowed and the risk of making mistake is set to minimum.

Falling for aesthetics

We all love eye catching purchases, but trust me: that's not what you're after in this case! Your search for proven squirrel proof bird feeder should not result in buying garden ornament, but in buying fully functional squirrel proof bird feeder. So if your appetites are into birdhouse decor, you should go for decorative birdhouse and if you want anti-squirrel bird feeder you'd better remember to sink the aesthetics to the bottom of your pondering list. Never forget that the feeder you want must have at least one inbuilt anti-squirrel feature!

Unconditional trust in squirrel-proof bird feeders reviews

It is always good thing to have an insight into reviews of people who already own squirrel proof feeder we got hooked on. And that's true. But we think it's OK to adopt independent strangers experiences on certain feeder models, right?
WRONG! And here's why:
I don't know if you have already noticed this, but why is it that even the most renowned and the most respectable anti-squirrel bird feeders in the market receive negative reviews by its customers? Have you ever wondered how come a single squirrel squirrel-proof bird feeder could get whole 5 stars review from X customers and the exact number of only one stars from unhappy customers?
Well, there's perfectly reasonable explanation to this, in fact there are two explanations:
- While extremely positive reviews may come from feeder manufacturer and their affiliates, extremely negative reviews are possible from competition that tries to downgrade feeder's quality
- Negative reviews may and will come from people who made wrong shopping choice with inadequate feeder type and inadequate placement and usage of the feeder. Those are the people who were shopping without strategy (please read on).

Shopping without squirrel-proof strategy

Most people believe they'll buy squirrel proof bird feeder and that's it. This is the single biggest mistake and single biggest reason for wrong shopping choice!
After some time of studying of all kinds of the squirrel proof bird feeders available for sale, reading contradictory squirrel-proof bird feeders reviews, watching videos related to the subject and doing pretty much of everything to find a "holy grail" solution for my backyard squirrels problem, I have finally discovered a simple truth about it all and I want to share it with you here.
And the simple truth is: no existing squirrel proof bird feeder will get you rid of the squirrels by itself because the feeder is only single component of your squirrel-proof strategy and not the squirrel-proof strategy alone. Further on, any squirrel-proof bird feeder you buy will need a lot of your thinking to achieve the top performance. Think of it as a chess game - you are the player and your bird feeder is your most powerful figure. No matter how powerful it may be, it can't win the game without you and other assisting figures!
Here's another real life example to show you that anti-squirrel feeders demand : looking for "absolute squirrel proof feeder" is the same as if you are looking for "the absolute water-proof watch" and we all know the watches are water-proof up to certain depths only! The same works for squirrel-proof feeders: they are all squirrel-proof up up to some point and depending on how you use them.
But before you determine what your anti-squirrel strategy is going to be like, you need to be familiar with the types of anti-squirrel bird feeders first because they hold central part of your anti-squirrel defense system and therefore are good starting point to build the strategy from.

Types of squirrel proof bird feeders

Getting to know unique features of different squirrel proof bird feeders types is your first step towards building successful anti-squirrel strategy. So here's classification of the feeders with the feeder examples of each group. I strongly recommend visiting all the links with feeder examples before you get the idea what might work for you. ANY of the feeders you'll find bellow will give good results once you learn how to use them and where to place them!

Depending on the squirrel proof mechanism they feature, all feeders may be classified into two major categories: electric and mechanical.

Electric squirrel proof bird feeders

This type of feeders utilizes electric energy to prevent squirrels from stealing bird food. Depending on the way how they use electric energy to chase the squirrels away, electric bird feeders may be further classified into two sub groups:

- Spinning squirrel proof bird feeders: electric power is used to spin off the squirrels from feeders perch the moment the squirrel comes close to the bird feeding port. To see how it works please check this example of spinning squirrel proof bird feeder.

- The "electric shock" squirrel proof bird feeders: electric power is used to give the squirrels small and harmless electric shock similar to the static we all get surprised by here and there. This small static is what squirrels feel when touching two metal parts of the feeder simultaneously. For more details, please check this example of squirrel shocking bird feeder.

Things to know about electric squirrel proof bird feeders:

Electric feeders feature inbuilt local battery unit that's recharged either by charger or by solar power. In spite of being very effective, the squirrel-proof features of electric feeders are next to nothing when out of power. This means you have to check regularly if the battery is charged. Or if the feeder is solar powered, cell must have direct access to the sunlight (snow and dirt cleaning as well as placing feeder out of shade). The truth is electric bird feeders need your frequent supervision to function properly and if for any reason you can not afford the time to inspect your electric bird feeder at least twice a week, it might not be right choice for you.

Mechanical squirrel proof bird feeders

This broad group of squirrel proof bird feeders consists of feeder models that feature some kind of mechanical barrier of some other mechanism to prevent squirrels from accessing bird feeding ports. Depending on squirrel-proof concept, mechanical bird feeders may be placed in three major categories:
- Caged squirrel-proof bird feeders - simple but effective feeders presented by regular non squirrel-proof bird feeders placed in the cage. The width of the grid on cage construction is being set so that only small birds can enter the cage and reach the feeder, while big birds, rats and squirrels can't. To see several examples please visit the page dedicated to caged squirrel-proof bird feeders.
- Anti-squirrel baffle bird feeders - these are the feeders with inbuilt anti-squirrel baffle, a mechanical barrier that prevents squirrels from reaching bird feeding ports. Typical example of this group is this four seed chamber anti squirrel feeder. In broader perspective, anti-squirrel baffles themselves are more than welcome as a part of your anti-squirrel defense system and if your feeder does not have inbuilt baffle, you'd definitely want to buy one in order to additionally squirrel-proof the feeder you own. There's one thing you need to note here: the wider the baffle is in diameter, the more efficient it is!
- Squirrel proof bird feeders with weight mechanism make possibly the largest group within category of mechanical bird feeders. They use simple fact that the squirrels are much heavier than wild bird and therefore the anti-squirrel mechanism of these feeders is set to trigger off under the squirrel weight only. Most of these feeders offer you possibility to fine tune the set off weight, so that you can even set the size of the birds that are allowed to be fed at your feeder. There are two working principles of weight based bird feeders: either the feeding ports shut down under the squirrels weight like in Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder, or feeder perches are being set not to withstand the weight of the squirrels like in Droll Yankees Whipper Feeder.

Ultimate anti-squirrel bird feeding strategy

If you made this far, I am pretty sure you got familiar with the most of the feeder types available for sale. You have also found out that there is no such thing as "perfect squirrel proof feeder". In this chapter, we will try to build squirrel-proof strategy in order to make that feeder work as perfect as possible.

Now let's first decide what exactly should we expect from our squirrel proof strategy?
Most people expect to prevent squirrels from eating bird food and that's OK. But we want even more than that! We want to make everything possible in order to prevent squirrels from even stepping on our feeder scarring off the birds. This way, instead of the first line of fire, we are putting our squirrel proof feeder in the last line of anti-squirrel defense system which is the best possible practice by far.

Here's how we do it:

Placement, placement, placement... Believe it or not this is the most important thing to consider because even the most expensive and the most praised feeders are worth nothing if you choose wrong place for it. Now, try to imagine your backyard for a moment and try to figure out the spot where your feeder is going to be placed. Be warned: the squirrels may and will attack your feeder from the ground, nearby trees, walls, fences, from anything they can climb on. If you can picture a spot in your backyard that's 5 feet above the ground (that's how much a squirrel can jump in height), and at least 10 feet away (squirrels can jump that much across) from any tree trunk, branch, fence, roof or any spot the squirrels can jump from - you may consider yourself lucky. If I was you, I'd definitely go for something like pole mounted squirrel proof bird feeder or maybe some other hanging squirrel proof bird feeder combined with third party bird feeder pole with anti squirrel baffle. So if your backyard offers enough space, you'll definitely want to avoid critical distance from surrounding objects. But if you don't have enough space you'll have to hang your feeder to a tree or mount it to a pole anyway... but then you are going to need additional squirrel proofing techniques to assist your feeder with: baffles and squirrel repellents are more than welcome in situation like that.

Squirrel-proof bird feeder poles - their primary role is to stop squirrels climbing up the pole while holding feeders at the safe distance from the ground (5 feet or more). Be aware that the poles do not protect feeders from the above or side attacks, so keep the distance and use the baffles to secure your feeder additionally.

Using anti-squirrel baffles and domes - Baffles and domes are of tremendous help when boosting squirrel proof features of the feeder. Domes are most commonly used to prevent squirrel attacks from the "above" when the feeder is hanged to a tree, while the baffles are in charge to prevent the attacks from "below" if you need to squirrel-proof the feeder pole. For more tips on choosing good baffles and their usage please visit anti-squirrel baffles and domes page.

Squirrel repellents - out of a large group of squirrel repellents, I recommend mixing bird food with hot and spicy bird food additive that's so hot the squirrels won't touch it once they get burned...lol. On the other side, the birds don't have hot food receptors and won't feel a thing!

No matter how comprehensive, this guide is not perfect and it is probably missing to share some info. So if you have any questions on squirrel-proof bird feeders or maybe suggestion on how to make this guide better, please make comment bellow.
Anti-squirrel baffles (also called "squirrel-proof baffles") are dish or tray shaped objects mounted on bird feeders with primary role to act as mechanical barrier preventing squirrels from reaching and stealing bird food. Squirrel baffles are usually made of resistant metal or plastic materials in order to stand different types of weathering, but also to withstand squirrel bites and weight. Secondary role of squirrel baffles is to act like umbrella and help protect bird seed from rain, snow and intensive sunlight that can lead to seed germination or mold. Those special baffles that come from the above of the feeder are usually called "domes".
Though some types of squirrel proof bird feeders already come in package with anti-squirrel baffles included (like this bird feeder with anti squirrel baffle), most of "non squirrel-proof" feeders require squirrel baffles to be bought and added separately.

Here comes tough part: how to choose effective anti-squirrel baffle?

The truth is: choosing great squirrel-proof baffle hugely depends on the type of the feeder you already have! Is it hanging bird feeder like the one on the image above or pole mounted? Then if fixed on pole - is the pole round in shape or square shaped? I guess you understand this is important for bubble tray to be fixed properly to the pole. And there's one more thing: take into consideration the number of baffles your feeder needs because sometimes it is good idea to squirrel proof your feeder with not one but two baffles - one from the above and the one from bellow the feeder. This is of great importance, especially in case your feeder is on the pole.
Although general tips are hard to give, there's still one tip you should remember when choosing the baffle - always go for a baffle that is wide in diameter! The wider the baffle tray is, the harder it is for squirrels to make past the baffle, so for the best results try not to choose anything less than 15" in diameter.
And one more thing to remember - there are some very decorative anti-squirrel baffles out there but don't get carried away by beauty. Think of functionality in a first place and put aesthetics on a side when pondering your future squirrel-proof baffle.
There's big chance you folks have already heard about this one, but in case you've missed it - please meet famous Droll Yankees Whipper anti squirrel bird feeder. The Whipper is another member of reputable Droll Yankees feeders family, a well known manufacturer of good quality squirrel proof bird feeders.
With four feeding ports and food reservoir five pounds of bird seed, this hanging 28" tube shaped bird feeder seems pretty much like any other ordinary bird feeder. But there's more to it. Aside from really good manufacturing quality confirmed by many owners of the feeder, this feeder features really unique bird seed preservation method based on silver coated anti microbial reservoir tube. This means that the bird food inside the feeder stays fresh for a very long time without the risk of bacterial or fungal infection of the birds! This unique food protection patent is called "Microban®" and for more details please visit this page.
On the othe hand ,"Whipper" bird feeder utilizes the "old school" squirrel-proof technology and is not technologically advanced as some other family members like Spinning Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder I have reviewed here before. Still, "Whipper" model enjoys high reputation among its owners due to its effective anti-squirrel concept.

So how the anti-squirrel feature works?

The Whipper belongs to the group of mechanical squirrel proof bird feeders and like the most of the models in this group it uses simple trick to repel the squirrels from bird food. The trick is in the squirrel's weight which exceeds common bird's weight by far. If you take close look at the Whipper's bottom tray, you'll notice four curved bird roosts attached to the feeder. The roosts are not firmly fixed to the feeder body. They are practically hanging by the joints attached to the spring mechanism that's been fine-tuned to hold the weight of single small bird only. Anything heavier than that will cause the roosts to move from original horizontal to vertical position. This way, intruders are left without the stand and simply fall off the feeder. To sum it up: the squirrels, the raccoon, rats and big birds are too heavy for this feeder so this feeder belongs to the group of bird feeders for small birds only. What we have here is review of really unique type of anti-squirrel bird feeder that differs much from any other bird feeder you can buy online. Among the other features, "Squirrel-Off" solar bird feeder is possibly the most expensive squirrel proof bird feeder in the market... but in return - it is technologically the most advanced bird feeder ever!
Basically, the "Squirrel-Off" solar feeder belongs to the group of electric squirrel proof bird feeders, but unlike any other other feeder it uses solar energy for its anti-squirrel tactics. So let's see how this feeder works.

"Squirrel-Off" feeder features

My first impression is that the designer of this bird feeder did not care too much about feeder's decorative side and it seems that the feeder's functionality comes first here. A minimalist looks, resembling simplified metal birdhouse painted green is a stereotype seen so many times in many of bird feeders in the market these days. Bird food is not served through feeding holes, but from feeding platform and the birds are offered two roosts to comfortably find the place on. Good thing about the way the feeder's construction is that it is really easy for cleaning, and also it is up to your choice whether you are going to hang it or place it on a pole.

But what's that blue square on feeder's roof? Well, that is a solar cell that collects light energy and turns it into electric energy that is necessary for keeping this feeder "squirrel free". So how it works?

Anti-squirrel concept of "Squirrel-Off" feeder

"Squirrel-Off" feeder gives small and absolutely harmless electric shock to all attacking squirrels. Practically, it is static electricity you feel sometimes when shaking hands to someone... sounds familiar, right? The whole idea is to keep the feeder under electric charge till the squirrels touch it. The moment the contact happens the snapping static discharge runs through squirrel's limb and it simply runs away. The best thing about it is that this feeder does not need battery - it is completely on autopilot due to self-recharging from solar energy.

But how come the birds don't experience the same? It's because the birds have very different body structure from the squirrels and are virtually immune to the risk of small voltage electric shock. BTW, similar tactics to scare away the squirrels using electricity may be found with battery powered electric squirrel proof bird feeder created by Wild Bill.

Now, here's a video clip to show you how this solar bird feeder scares the squirrels away:

Unlike previously reviewed electric spinning squirrel proof bird feeder that gets rid of the squirrels by spinning them off, the feeder that's about to be reviewed here utilizes electric power in very different way... and I bet you can guess how it works from the title of this review!
The "Wild Bill's 8 port squirrel-proof feeder" gives squirrels tiny and absolutely harmless electric shock that's rather unpleasant than painful, but it's informative enough so that the squirrels understand clearly they are not welcome at the feeder. After several attempts to reach the food and experiencing static each and every time they hop on feeder's metal surface, the "critters" will finally withdraw for good as they actually get trained to avoid the feeder in the future.
It's also important to underline that the birds are not objects of electric shocks because they are smaller than the squirrels and not able to trigger the closing of battery powered electric circuit. This would be basic concept of this anti squirrel feeder and now let's see more in-depth features review.
"Wild Bill's 8 port squirrel-proof feeder" looks pretty much like classic outdoor lantern so it easily fits in almost any garden decor. Wide upper tray is dome shaped in order to protect the bird seed from snow and rain, while the lower tray comes convenient as a birds resting place. The dimensions of the feeder are 18"x15" (height and width) and the food reservoir may store up to amazing 14 lbs of bird seed so the frequent refills are not necessary. The reservoir has total of 8 feeding holes with according perches so that the birds can easily find a place to stand on. You can this feeder on shepherds hook or on tree but you can also mount it to a pole - the choice is all yours, but the pole is not included in this feeder part list.
The inside of the feeder features local electric grid made of wires attached to feeder metal parts. Of course, we are talking about low voltage (9 V) alkaline battery powered circuit. Without any knowledge about AC/DC stuff, the squirrel will step on the feeder and of course touch the metal parts of it. And when the squirrel touches two separate metal surfaces (i.e. plus and minus battery poles) - that's when the GANGNAM style dance starts! The static chases a squirrel away from the feeder and after several attempts the squirrel will go away. Of course, this low voltage is completely harmless for the squirrels health.
This short video clip shows a moment when the squirrel touches two metal surfaces of electric bird feeder and gets instant electric shock:
